House Sittting In Carnarvon

House Sittting In Carnarvon

We discover House Sitting.

After crossing the Kimberly Ranges and Broome, and being in remote areas for quite a while, we were looking for somewhere to stop and catch our breath for a few weeks.

Crossing the Kimberleys and Visiting Broome

We finally came to Carnarvon in WA, a town well known as the Fruit Bowl of the west.  Finally some fresh grown fruit and produce, a chance to catch our breath and do a few maintenance jobs on the motorhome.

Our next challenge, was finding somewhere to stay, for more than a few days.  We started off in the local Caravan Park, before discovering that one of our friend’s parents lived in Carnarvon.  An impromptu visit soon found us talking about our travels and their impending plans to travel overseas the following week.  They then asked us if we would be interested in looking after their home, 2 dogs, chickens, garden and pool while they were away.

Dogs, Garden, Chickens & Pool

The thought of a pool to swim in for the next few weeks quickly helped us make up our minds, so with an offer to good to refuse, we quickly relocated and settled out of the way at the back of the property.  We hooked up to power and water, and got to know our new found friends Gladys & Cooper.

Honky set up for our first House Sitting job in Carnarvon

Our hosts were to be leaving in a few days’ time, so we got to know them briefly, and they gave us the rundown of what was required.  It was all pretty basic stuff, feed the chooks every few days and collect the eggs, make sure the dogs are walked and fed daily, keep an eye on the garden and make sure the pool water is topped up.

The benefit to us was the fact that we could stay in our motorhome.  We were comfortable in it, and it meant we didn’t have to intrude in their personal space.  We didn’t have to unpack anything and got to sleep in our own beds.  For our hosts, it meant that could go away with the security of knowing their home and pets would be well looked after, with the added bonus of knowing we would not be in their personal space.

The property was actually 13 Acres in size, so it was probably more like Farm Sitting than House Sitting, but either way, it was a great experience.  It was good to be grounded for a while and gave us a great chance to have a really good look around the area and catch up on so much.

It was also a great experience for the kids to learn to look after animals and of course the added bonus of the pool meant they didn’t want to leave.   We were also fortunate enough to meet a few other locals that were friends of our hosts, so the local knowledge of the area came in very handy.

What was initially going to be a few day stop over, turned out to be a 3 week stay in a great location and at no cost to us.  We thoroughly enjoyed staying put for a few weeks, and the experience that came from House Sitting.  We were hooked, and this became one of our preferred camp site options, so naturally we thought we would add a House Sitting Category to our Directory.

If you are planning a trip away and would like someone in a caravan or motorhome to look after you property, pets or garden, feel free to Register and place your ad in our directory.

If you are a traveler looking for an alternative place to park your van for a few days or weeks, keep an eye out in the House Sitting section of our directory which will soon be populated with a list of House Sitting opportunities.
