Rainbow Beach, Inskip Point Camping & Caravan Parks
We recently spent a week camping at Inskip Point and had a great time exploring the Rainbow Beach village. For a small place, it is jam-packed with a great range of shops and services. There are loads of things to do to keep you entertained. We started off with a short walk in the Great Sandy National park which lead to the Carlo Blow, steep sand dunes which kept the kids entertained for hours as they slid down them.
(What kept them entertained was Dad having a go and face planting into the sand!)
It was well worth the walk especially with the spectacular views over Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point.
From the surf club, you can enter the beach and take part in one of Rainbow’s favourite pastimes, 4WD’ing on the beach. Just beware of the rocks at Mudlow Point which has bought many a 4WD unstuck and turned them into submarines. There is a great photo wall in the local pub to check out and see those that didn’t make it. For those that don’t have their own 4WD, or don’t want to take their own over to Fraser Island.
Fraser Explorer Tours are a great alternative. They depart from Rainbow Beach and take the barge across to the island for a full day trip including lunch.
Things To Do
The safer option could always be a horse ride along the beach, which is run from the Horse Riding School just in town. The fishing camp held every July each year was on when we were there. We were somewhat embarrassed by the two small fish we threw back. At Carlo point, there are places to hire boats, or you could see Tony from Rainbow Beach Fishing Charters. He has over 20 years experience fishing the local waters and he knows where the fish are. You can head to his Facebook page and see some of his recent catches. Ferry service to Tin Can Bay is available.
Food-wise it had everything, including some great pies from the bakery, which hit the spot on a cold winter’s day. There are heaps of great cafes to choose from, including the Surf Club, Bowling Club, and the Local Pub. We found a great butcher in town with a huge range of products. They will Cryovac your meat for you if traveling over to Fraser or beyond. They have a local fish shop which has a wide range of locally caught fish. Down a small laneway, we discovered a well-stocked Fruit & Vegi shop. It was recently opened and has a deli and sandwich bar. The produce was fresh and well-priced.

The town has many other essential services, including Post Office, Chemists, Laundromat, fuel outlets, camping stores, clothing, and gift stores.
Places To Stay
Apart from the campsites out at Inskip, there are two caravan parks to choose from with a full range of facilities.
There is the Rainbow Waters Holiday Park at Carlo Point, or Rainbow Beach Holiday Village right in town. Both listed in our directory or out at Inskip Point.
The Oakes Camping Area – Inskip Point
The Oaks camping area is one of 5 camping areas on the Inskip Peninsular. Located behind the foredunes, off Inskip Point Road. This is the closest camping area to the entrance of the recreation area.
S.S. Dorrigo Camping Area – Inskip Point
S.S. Dorrigo camping area is one of 5 camping areas on the Inskip Peninsular. It is located behind the foredunes, off Inskip Point Road. This is the second camping area after the entrance of the recreation area.
M.V. Natone Camping Area – Inskip Point
M.V. Natone camping area is one of 5 camping areas on the Inskip Peninsular. It is located behind the foredunes, off Inskip Point Road. This is the third camping area after the entrance of the recreation area.
M.V. Beagle Camping Area – Inskip Point
M.V. Beagle camping area is one of 5 camping areas on the Inskip Peninsular. It is located behind the foredunes, off Inskip Point Road. This is the fourth camping area after the entrance of the recreation area and smaller than the others.
Rainbow Beach Holiday Park
Rainbow Beach Holiday Park has 23 acres and offers guests the full range of accommodation. The park is at the gateway to Fraser Island at Rainbow Beach.
Rainbow Beach Holiday Village
Quiet, well maintained family park situated on the edge of the beautiful Cooloola National Park, overlooking sweeping 9km of holiday patrolled surf beach.
Unfortunately, Inskip Point at Rainbow Beach, which is our closest and best campsite from home, dropped into a sinkhole last night …26 Sept. 2015….this is a beautiful place to be, and i hope it doesnt impact too much on the future of campers. We have been going there for 40 plus years.
