Housing Crisis Sparks Controversy: Pensioner’s Backyard Tent Rental Ignites Debate
In the face of Australia’s escalating housing crisis, unconventional solutions are emerging, stirring both support and criticism. A recent incident in Tasmania has brought this issue into sharp focus, highlighting the desperate measures some are taking to address the shortage of affordable housing. A Tent for Rent: Generosity or Exploitation? Mark, a disability pensioner from Risdon Vale, a suburb on the outskirts of Hobart, has found himself at the centre of a heated debate after offering a camping tent in his backyard for $125 per week. The four-person tent, advertised as “emergency accommodation for a single person,” comes with no utilities or food provided While Mark insists his intentions are purely altruistic, the proposal has been met with widespread criticism. Many have labelled the offer as “shameful,” questioning whether such arrangements exploit the vulnerable rather than provide genuine assistance A History of Helping Despite the backlash, Mark stands firm in his belief that he’s “doing his bit” to combat homelessness. He currently houses seven individuals in his home, which he rents for $450 per week. Mark’s history of support includes: – Providing shelter for those without funds – Welcoming ex-prisoners with no alternative housing options – Offering a refurbished tin […]

The Grey Nomads Awards 2021 | Nominees, 4th March 2022
The Grey Nomad Awards finalists were unveiled yesterday, recognising tourism businesses that best cater to mature age travellers around Australia. The Grey Nomad Awards, according to Awards Director Kim Morgan, give reliable information that assists senior tourists in making decisions about where to visit, stay, and play. The Awards highlight those operators and locations who are going above and beyond to provide grey nomads an exceptional experience,” Morgan says. “After such a hard two years for the tourism sector and destinations that rely on tourist incomes, all finalists are to be applauded. The number of organisations who submitted more than one category, she noted, shows that these Awards are recognised and make an impact. Unfortunately, not everyone who enters can be successful,” Morgan explained, “since there is both a minimal bar for being considered as a finalist and a maximum of just six finalists declared in any category. By this, we mean that we wish to recognise the accomplishments of all of our entrants, not just these finalists. The Grey Nomad Awards are judged by senior tourism professionals, some of whom have personal experience with the grey nomad lifestyle, thus being selected a finalist has more weight. 2021 Finalists The […]

Tyres – Size, Ratings & Inflation Pressures for Caravans
The below article is provided to us by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. Tyres play a critical role in determining the Handling and Stability characteristics of all caravans on the road. On a few frightening occasions, the tyres selected by a ‘van manufacturer have been dangerously “under-engineered”, in that their Maximum Load Rating was less than the Maximum Load that the tyres could legally (as per the GTM Rating) be subjected to! In far too many cases, the tyres selected by the ‘van manufacturer have been hideously “over-engineered”, in that their Maximum Load Rating was much higher than the Maximum Load that the tyres would ever be subjected to! While there may be some other opinions on how much a tyre should be loaded to, for caravan tyres it is reasonable to have the maximum Load applied to a tyre, at around 90 – 95% of the Rating. Certainly it should not be around 50 – 60%. “BIGGER ain’t always BETTER”… certainly applies to caravan wheels and tyres. If you are not happy with the way your ‘van handles on the road, or if you have any other concerns about your ‘van’s Tyre Size or Inflation Pressures, […]

Views Sought On The Caravan Industry | ACCC – Australian Competition & Consumer Commission
The ACCC – most pleasingly – is taking a very close inspection of problems in the Caravan Industry… in relation to violations of the Australian Consumer Law. The Commission has issued the following Media Release (178/21): https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/views-sought-on-caravan-industry The Survey is very easy to complete… with plain instructions and simple questions. All owners who have had “Consumer Protection” problems with their caravan are requested to complete and lodge the “Purchaser Survey“… as per the Media Release. This Project is being taken very seriously by the ACCC, and provides an excellent opportunity for ‘vanners to take practical action to help eliminate the many problems that have caused – and are still causing – costly, lengthy and heart-breaking dramas for many caravanners. In reality, very few ‘vanners who suffer unacceptable non-compliance problems with their ‘van – or are subjected to the refusal by Suppliers to rectify defects, even Major Failures – contact the ACCC. Normally they call their State Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs office for advice. In addition, they usually contact helpful internet Forums or a Consumer Advocate for assistance. The prime Issues covered by the ACL (Australian Consumer Law) are: Section 54 of the ACL is a guarantee imposed by law on a supplier that the goods supplied are of acceptable quality. Acceptable quality is defined in section 54 of the ACL. Section 54 (2) and (3) states that: (2) Goods are of acceptable quality if they are: (a) fit for all the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied; and (b) acceptable in appearance and finish; and (c) free […]

Travellers With Pets: Their is a Tick Infestation, and Its Only Going to Get Worse
This is an emergency alert for everyone travelling through the outback with their dogs. Ticks are everywhere, and your dog could be carrying the tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis! The NT government has announced that veterinarians across Australia have noticed more cases of dogs infected with this nasty disease – thousands in fact; meanwhile, WA reports seeing increased infections from them also. Tick-infested environments can be found in places like petrol stations, caravan parks, and when camping remotely. Be careful when you are in these places–you need to watch out for ticks! The tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis was particularly common in places like Katherine, on the outskirts of Darwin and around Kununurra in WA, stated Greg Mifsud, national wild dog management co-ordinator at the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions in Queensland. People need to make sure their dogs are protected against ticks. They should use both oral medication and an insecticide-impregnated collar. They should also check their animal often. Never take them to places where there is loose-leaf litter or areas that may have ticks. It’s essential to be constantly vigilant about this problem so it does not spread to the eastern states, he also added. Make sure you check your dogs anytime […]
ACCC Issues Warning Over Deadly Heaters
Australia’s consumer watchdog has once again called for caravanners who may have a dangerous water heater in their leisure vehicle. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) encourages consumers to look for Suburban-branded dangerous dual fuel electric and gas heaters prior to embarking on post-COVID lockdown holidays. There is a concern that over half off these units can release deadly carbon monoxide odourless during the gas mode operation. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a terrifying and potentially deadly situation. It’s important to be aware of the signs so you can protect yourself from this hazard, as exposure may lead not only to severe chronic illness or injury but also death in some cases! This is quite alarming, as at present there are over 8300 people who have not been able to register their heating units in order for them be inspected free of charge. The risk of failure being so high because of the major defect, the ACCC is concerned that owners may have no idea about the recall and make use of their motorhome or caravan without checking that they are safe to use. “Consumers should not use the affected water heaters in the gas mode under any circumstances, even […]
Myrtle Park Campgrounds, TAS Re-Open for Upcoming Holiday Season
The City of Launceston will reopen the ever-popular Myrtle Park camping site to the public on October 22nd, after a lengthy winter closure. The proposal to establish overnight camping costs at the site at $20 per night per site, up to a maximum of 10 persons, was unanimously approved at today’s ordinary meeting of councillors. This is the same price as it was last year, according to the recommendation. It is with great pleasure that Council has been able to restore access to the park in time for this summer’s school holidays, according to Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten. “Despite the fact that they will be on-site 24/7, the new operators are looking forwards to a busy summer season. I wouldn’t be surprised if the park was completely booked during the whole Christmas season, given how popular it has proved to be in recent years “Mayor Van Zetten made the statement. This year, the public will have access to 30 campsites, an increase from the previous year’s total of 20. Of them, 15 will be located beside the river. While the hall will be accessible for reservations, the day-use facilities, such as the tennis courts and the kiosk, will once […]
Popular Rapid Bay Campground in S.A Remains Open Despite Complaints
Despite a letter from a neighbouring ratepayer who asked for the campground to be shut down, Rapid Bay Campground, in South Australia will remain open. A vote to keep the campground open and to sign a deal for a campsite manager to operate the land for the next two to three years was held in Yankalilla Council on Tuesday night. Cape Jervis Progress Association chairperson Lauren Barrington was inspired to start a petition after receiving many questions about the campsite’s future in May. Over time, it has received over 9,000 digital signatures. Even after replying to the ratepayers’ legal letter in May, Nigel Morris, Council chief executive hasn’t heard back from them. Mr Morris said that if it wasn’t a campground, the location would be just used for illegal camping. He said shutting the campground would cause more problems than it solves. A letter from a legal firm working for a Cygnet Place homeowner, requesting the campsite to be closed, was received by the council in May. It asked the city council to stop causing or allowing the use of the property for a public campground. Many visitors flock to this well-known vacation destination, and some residents have expressed worries […]

Caravan Issues – Annoying & Continuous Defects Causing Problems for Van Owners
The below article is provided to us by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. It is most disappointing to continually hear of the same type of Design and Quality problems still being detected by ‘Van Owners‘. Colin Delves Into the Issues It can only be hoped that the new requirements – as legislated in the Road Vehicle Standards Act – will help to prevent these defects from continuing… but as is now well-known, not all of these requirements will apply to all caravan manufacturers… especially the smaller manufacturers who are highly disproportionately represented in the number of problems reported. It seems incredible that all caravan manufacturers are not required to abide by the same stringent obligations, as mandated for motor vehicle manufacturers. Again, it can only be hoped that Government business auditors – and vehicle inspectors – will concentrate on quickly and properly ensuring that the reasons for the defects occurring in the first place, will be acted on, and that production Inspection Check-Lists will double-check to ensure that the issues have indeed been resolved. The List The List of continuing annoying – and often serious – defects that are causing problems for ‘vanners – roughly in the […]

More Community Events Being Cancelled for 2021
Covid 19 just keeps on rearing its head all around Australia, and in turn, cities and regions are having to cancel events, that bring in huge amounts of tourists and tourism spend. Multiple Events Being Cancelled The rising spread of the delta strain of Covid is once again causing states to restrict movement and force lockdowns around Australia. This is in turn, is causing many Towns and Regions around Australia, to cancel events. August alone has decimated regional events, with over 30 iconic events scheduled all around Australia to be reschedule to later in the year or altogether cancelled until 2022. Probably the most iconic upcoming event, the ‘Melbourne Cup of the Outback’, The Birdsville Races has become the latest casualty being cancelled for the second year in a row, now being rescheduled until 2022. With the QLD Government’s recommendation to refrain from travel from the recently lifted lockdowns, the event organisers made a call as the risk was simply too great. There was an air of excitement for the Birdsville Races on the back of the successful ‘Big Red Bash’ held nearby earlier this year in July. Over 10,000 people ventured to the foothills of the Big Red Sand […]
Caravans and the Overtaking Dangers by the Caravan Council of Australia
The below article is provided to us by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. There are too many serious accidents – and frightening incidents – involving caravans attempting to over-take another vehicle on our roads. Car & Caravan over-taking another vehicle Safety is by far the most important consideration when towing a caravan. You must have sufficient power available to accelerate the car-caravan combination at a reasonable rate, and to maintain areasonable speed when climbing hills. It is vital that you are able to accelerate quickly to get out of trouble, and especially to avoid getting into trouble, for example when over-taking another vehicle. It is also vital that you are able to stop at a reasonable rate… safely, and in a straight line. With so many significant variables involved, it is not possible to provide a definitive procedure to determine the overall distance required for over-taking, for every tow-vehicle – caravan situation. Risking your life – and that of your passengers and other road-users – to save a few seconds can come with enormous risks… are you prepared to pay this horrendous price??? The most important aspect is that the driver must have good eye-sight… especially for the perception of distance on the road. The No: 1 […]

More Rejection of Free Camps – The Saga Continues
Given the current situation with COVID-19, now has never been a better time to pack up your things and explore our big backyard that is Australia. Although now it feels as if low-cost or “free camping” may becoming a thing of the past, with more and more councils rejecting proposals put forth for free camping and low-cost campgrounds. Being forced to close up or shut down and no longer being available for use for those looking to stay away immersed in nature with an authentic brief camping experience or stopover. Many low-cost campgrounds around Australia face the same problem- not knowing what their future holds. Recently Albany, has been dismissed from a free campground proposal in the CBD. Albany, one of WA’s most popular tourist destination, has recently voted against plans to offer a free camping area in the CBD and become an “RV friendly” town, claiming it is “bad for business”. The ACCWA (the Association of Caravan Clubs of WA) recently had their proposal rejected by the Albany council at their monthly meeting over concerns free sites within the CBD would hurt caravan parks financially. Within ACCWA’s application, they stated that RV status would mean providing appropriate parking, amenities […]
Camping and Caravanning is Booming, More Aussies Hitting The Road, Than Ever Before
In 2020, international borders closed due to the global pandemic, dramatically limiting the ability of Australians to travel. As lockdowns slowly open up, more people are hitting the roads like never before. Now the interstate borders have eased restrictions, domestic travel is on the rise again, along with the purchase of new and used caravans, motorhomes, camper trailers and RVs. If you’ve been considering making an RV purchase or scheduling a family road trip, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Increased Domestic Travel With international borders closed, more Australians than ever are taking to the road and planning domestic road trips. In fact, 67% of Australians are more likely to consider an rv or camper trailer purchase now than they were in the past. Holidays are an Australian national passtime and the holiday overseas is now an option that most are opting out of. Hence, the increased surge of camping and caravanning. The purchase of RV’s create an individual, safe, bubble for families to live in on the road. There’s no need to expose yourself to viruses by flying or utilizing mass transit when you can instead hit the road in your own vehicle. Planning out […]

Camping Restrictions for the Easter Period
Easter is one of the busiest periods for camping and caravanning in Australia. This time last year, the whole country shut down all campgrounds and caravan parks. Chaos ensued as a lot of holiday makers preparing for the Easter break, had to cancel bookings and prepare to hunker down. Those who were already travelling on the road, where thrust into total confusion, as states shut borders and were found stranded. Covid-19, 12 Months On Things look a lot different 12 months on. Whilst all states have lifted camping restrictions, there are still some rules in place for the Easter period. Once of the more stricter states on Covid-19 restrictions is perhaps Queensland. The Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk announced easing restrictions to camping, which we covered in a previous post. All in all, it is looking like a normalish Easter break (touch wood) barring any catastrophic Covid outbreaks. However, be mindful of each state’s restrictions on camping. Victoria has announced eased restrictions as of the 26th March as well, with increased numbers of people allowed to gather in public places up to 200, which is good news for camp grounds and caravan parks. South Australia will be easing their restrictions on the […]
North Stradbroke Island—Beachside Camping Close to Brisbane
For anyone thinking about a Queensland island getaway, there’s no need to go to the far north of the state; there’s also a great southern option—North Stradbroke Island. Also known simply as ‘Straddie’, the island is located less than 40 km from the centre of Brisbane, near enough to the city, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast for anything from a day trip to an overnight or longer stay. Why go to North Stradbroke? While some may think mainly of water activities when they think of an island, North Stradbroke offers a range of activities to suit a wide variety of tastes. Yes, there are plenty of water-based things to do, including swimming, boating, fishing, surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving. But there’s plenty to do on land as well. If you like walking, there are beaches, bush and towns to explore. You can also go 4-wheel driving or cycling, play bowls, take a tour or relax with some yoga, just to name a few options. Wildlife is abundant on and around the island. Birdwatching opportunities are plentiful, and the island is also home to many mammals, including koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and bandicoots. In the surrounding waters are dolphins and dugong, and […]
The Status of the Caravan Industry in Australia – Part 3: Government Regulatory Issues
This is Part 3 of 3 separate Articles on the Status of the Caravan Industry in Australia. Information supplied by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. These articles will specifically be concentrating on issues in relation to: 1: Manufacturers (and Importers) and Dealers| 2: Caravanners 3: Government No one can possibly honestly deny that there are still numerous problems that are badly tarnishing the image and reputation of the industry, and causing much grief to many caravanners. The responses to Part 1 of the CCA article – The Status of the Caravan Industry in Australia “Manufacturers (and Importers) and Dealers (Suppliers)” Issues – and Part 2 “Caravanners” Issues have been extremely positive, with many supportive comments. Part 3 of the Status article “Government Regulatory Issues” follows. It highlights the urgent need for all relevant Government Regulatory Authorities to fully appreciate the significance of the industry problems, and to promptly implement suitable legal requirements to stop these unacceptable problems, once and for all. 1: Too many new, under-resourced, manufacturers and importers competing in a very limited, and highly-competitive, market. Many of the newer, and smaller, companies who have entered the industry in recent times, are appreciably handicapped by being […]
Queensland Eases Camping Restrictions in Time for Easter
Additional easing of COVID-19 restrictions is evidence that life and the economy are beginning to return to normal. Although the pandemic is not over, it’s possible to see minor signs of light at the end of the tunnel. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is beginning to relax some restrictions throughout Queensland. Although coronavirus is still present, it appears to be less prevalent than six months to a year ago. Some Queensland public hospitals remain on code yellow, and mobile coronavirus testing vans are still operating in Far North Queensland. These hospitals help to treat individuals in Indigenous communities, providing them with necessary medical care. On the other hand, in many parts of Queensland, restrictions are beginning to relax just in time for Easter weekend and school holidays — and residents couldn’t be happier about the situation. Easing From 12th March Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has relaxed COVID-19 restrictions beginning from the 12th March, increasing indoor gathering restrictions from 50 to 100 people. If you are hosting a party indoors, you can invite as many as 100 people. This restriction also applies to events like weddings and funerals but dramatically increases the number of people who can attend this type of service. We recommend […]
The Status of the Caravan Industry in Australia – Part 2: Caravanners Issues
This is Part 2 of 3 separate Articles on the Status of the Caravan Industry in Australia. Information supplied by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. These articles will specifically be concentrating on issues in relation to: 1: Manufacturers (and Importers) and Dealers| 2: Caravanners 3: Government The response to Part 1 of the CCA article in relation to the Status of the Caravan Industry – discussing issues primarily of concern regarding Manufacturers / Importers and Dealers – has been very well received, with many supportive responses… along with a few (constructive) criticisms and suggestions. Most certainly Manufacturers and Dealers are not entirely to blame for all of the industry issues! The obvious short-comings of Government Regulatory control “systems” are a major reason for the problems being faced by many caravan owners and potential-buyers. This will be addressed in Part 3 of the “Status” article. Part 2 covers the issues that Caravanners need to diligently address so as to prevent, or at least minimise, the risks – in order to better-protect themselves – from suffering the trauma and expense of having major problems that turn their travelling dreams into nightmares. A critical question is: “What degree of “Duty-of-Care” […]

Focus on Murwillumbah
Planning to stay a few nights at Murwillumbah is simply not enough to see the hidden treasures of this small country town. Known as the “Heart of the Tweed”, Murwillumbah is located in far north-eastern New South Wales in the Tweed Shire. It is only 30km south of the Queensland border and easily accessed via the Pacific Highway or outlying towns of Kyogle or Beaudesert from the West.
Tell Me More About Morven
If you want to experience a genuine outback Queensland town, and what life is like out in the bush, a stopover at Morven is definitely worthwhile. It is located on the Warrego Highway 90km before you get to Charleville and worth adding to the itinerary if you are en route to other parts of outback Queensland including Longreach or Birdsville. It may be one of the smaller towns in the outback, but it is steeped in history and still helps to play its part in the livestock industry.
Discover Stanley, Tasmania
Stanley was definitely a highlight of our trip to Tasmania about 6 years ago, and we were reminded just how good it was by our “Two Old Chooks” who passed through it during their travels and confirmed it as one of their favourite spots while travelling around Australia.
RV Friendly – Babinda
Babinda is located on the Bruce Highway 59km South of Cairns or 33km north of Innisfail. The scenery as you approach from either direction is stunning, with huge tree covered mountains ranges dominating the landscape. It is home to two of the highest mountains in Queensland, Mt Bartle Frere and Mt Bellenden Kerr. Boasting some of the highest rainfalls in Queensland, these mountain ranges provide the source for many of the crystal clear streams and waterfalls in the area.
The Amazingly Picturesque Yorke Peninsula
Yorke Peninsula is one of those places made for campers. Located just west of Adelaide, it is definitely worth the effort to check it out. Surrounded by St Vincent Gulf to the east and Spencer Gulf to the west, seafood is a specialty in these parts. There are national parks to explore, amazing beaches, historic ruins and some stunning cliff top walks. There is also a large variety of camping and caravanning options available.
Alkoomi Adventure Farm — A campsite that Inspires the Spirit of Giving
When we were approached by the Alkoomi Adventure Farm to be added into the FRC Directory. As we are always looking out for more great sites to add to the list, we added them immediately, and as we were preparing the details something caught our attention. Not only was it an absolutely stunning property and unique in what it offered, but we found out they donate 100% of their camping fees to Angel Flight.
Beautiful Burra
Not previously having heard of Burra, our original plan was for a quick stopover on our way to the Flinders Ranges, instead, we were pleasantly surprised with all that this small town of 2000 people had to offer. For us, our overnight stopover turned into a 3 night stay as we found there was more to this area than we first thought, making it an ideal location for Campers and Caravanners to base themselves and explore the region.
Our Trip To Charleville
Charleville, 683 kilometres west of Brisbane and as the crow flies directly west of the Sunshine Coast, acts as a gateway to many locations.
Stop a while @ Windorah
With its closest major neighbors over 300km away, Windorah is a somewhat isolated little town, but holds its own and packs in quite a lot to see and do, especially for avid campers and RV’ers. It has its own unique character and outback Queensland style, with historical old buildings full of rustic charm, picturesque ruins and stunning red sand hills.
Selection of a Suitable Tow-Vehicle… For a Caravan
Selecting a suitable tow-vehicle for a caravan is just as important as selecting a caravan that best-suits your particular travel needs. Sometimes a ‘vanner already owns a caravan, and wants to buy a tow-vehicle to tow it. Sometimes a ‘vanner already owns a tow-vehicle, and wants to buy a suitable caravan. Either way, it is vitally important to make a sound decision, based on doing sufficient “home-work”, to ensure that the purchase is exactly what you want, to best-suit your intended travel plans.
Chittering Valley – A great place to visit
You only have to travel approximately one hour north of Perth to discover the beautiful and diverse Chittering Valley nestled in the northern hills of the Darling Range. The area encompasses many small towns, including Muchea, Bindoon, and Wannamal, and the localities of Lower Chittering, Upper Chittering, and Mooliabeenie, each offering its own unique landscapes from undulating hills, sensational views over valleys of vineyards, orchards, paddocks, rocky outcrops, lakes, forest and bushland.

Coronavirus: COVID-19, To Wear A Mask, That Is The Question
It is no secret that the Coronavirus is highly infectious. The rate at which the virus has spread around the world and infected populations have taken nearly everyone by surprise. The most as risk are of the course, the older generation, or those with pre-existing health issues.
QLD & WA Tightens Border Restrictions
In an attempt to curb the hundreds of travellers still crossing into the Queensland border, despite the Government’s recommendations to not enter, State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced tighter restrictions.
New Alcohol Limits in Bottle Shops, Australia Wide
First the Australian Government shuts the pubs and clubs to inhibit the spread of the Coronavirus, Covid-19. This move has now moved people into purchasing large quantities of take-away alcohol.
