Tasmania – Northern Inland (14th Dec – 23rd Dec)

Tasmania – Northern Inland (14th Dec – 23rd Dec)

After leaving Burnie, we headed to a small town called Sheffield, for only a small town it kept us entertained for quite a while.  It sits with Mt Roland as its backdrop, a rather impressive mountain range that towers behind the town.
There is a Free Camp with a five night limited stay, and it is within walking distance to town.

Murals in Sheffield

The main attractions are the murals on most of the buildings in town.
All hand painted by local artists, they gave the town a great feel.  We were in town just in time for the annual Christmas Parade which included Santa and a free sausage sizzle in the park. They know how to put it all on here in Tassie.

RAILTON

We visited Railton, which had some amazing Topiary sculptures scattered through the town.

And you wouldn’t believe it, we found some local markets at a place called Claude Road.

DELORAINE

Deloraine was the next destination.  Located about 50km west of Launceston it is a small rural farming town located along the Meander River.

There is a great little overnight Free Camp in Westbury Place, which is an ideal place to stay and explore the town. It is only a short stroll into town via the suspension bridge and weir. Deloraine is also within striking distance to many attractions in the area, such as Liffey Falls, touted as one of Tasmania’s prettiest water falls,

Yarns Artwork in Silk, the Folk Museum, 41 Degrees South Salmon & Ginseng Farm and the Little Red Tractor Farmers Markets which operate on the second Saturday of each month.

PLENTY OF GOOD FOOD TO EAT

The surrounding farmlands are laden with tons of fresh produce. Tassie really is a hidden treasure when it comes to fresh grown food.  We did the rounds of the local honey farm, salmon farm, cold meat factory and the Raspberry farm, and gorged ourselves with Raspberries and Ice-cream for breakfast.

the kids love picking fruit straight from the farms

EVANDALE, LONGFORD & PERTH

We were then onto Evandale, a small town only about 15km out of Launceston.  Very old with lots of old convict buildings. There is a great Free Camp in the Market Grounds to stay at and explore the town. But, you have to move for Market Day. They were great markets and were able to stock up on fresh produce ready for the trip south to find the perfect destination for our first Christmas on the road.
