Cooee Point, Tasmania – Free Camp

Just out of Burnie TAS is a FREE CAMP at Cooee Point. Right on the waters edge, it is the site of the old town abattoir.

If you are there at the right time of year, you may even get to see the penguins feeding at night. Burnie’s forward thinking council has provided this spot for Fully Self Contained Vehicles. A permit is obtained from the Visitors Centre, and allows you to stay for 5 nights. The Info Centre is also home to the Makers Workshop which showcases Burnie’s history, makers, innovators and artist, allow a few hours just for this. Bernie and the surrounding areas have plenty to see and do, including the Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens just out of town, and Penguin Viewing Platforms.

Tyres – Size, Ratings & Inflation Pressures for Caravans

The below article is provided to us by Colin Young of the Caravan Council of Australia. Tyres play a critical role in determining the Handling and Stability characteristics of all caravans on the road. On a few frightening occasions, the tyres selected by a ‘van manufacturer have been dangerously “under-engineered”, in that their Maximum Load Rating was less than the Maximum Load that the tyres could legally (as per the GTM Rating) be subjected to! In far too many cases, the tyres selected by the ‘van manufacturer have been hideously “over-engineered”, in that their Maximum Load Rating was much higher than the Maximum Load that the tyres would ever be subjected to! While there may be some other opinions on how much a tyre should be loaded to, for caravan tyres it is reasonable to have the maximum Load applied to a tyre, at around 90 – 95% of the Rating. Certainly it should not be around 50 – 60%. “BIGGER ain’t always BETTER”… certainly applies to caravan wheels and tyres. Views Sought On The Caravan Industry | ACCC – Australian Competition & Consumer Commission

The ACCC – most pleasingly – is taking a very close inspection of problems in the Caravan Industry… in relation to violations of the Australian Consumer Law. The Commission has issued the following Media Release (178/21): https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/views-sought-on-caravan-industry The Survey is very easy to complete… with plain instructions and simple questions. All owners who have had “Consumer Protection” problems with their caravan are requested to complete and lodge the “Purchaser Survey“… as per the Media Release. This Project is being taken very seriously by the ACCC, and provides an excellent opportunity for ‘vanners to take practical action to help eliminate the many problems that have caused – and are still causing – costly, lengthy and heart-breaking dramas for many caravanners. In reality, very few ‘vanners who suffer unacceptable non-compliance problems with their ‘van – or are subjected to the refusal by Suppliers to rectify defects, even Major Failures – contact the ACCC. Normally they call their State Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs office for advice. In addition, they usually contact helpful internet Forums or a Consumer Advocate for assistance. The prime Issues covered by the ACL (Australian Consumer Law) are: Section 54 of the ACL is a guarantee imposed by law on a supplier that the goods supplied are of acceptable quality. Acceptable quality is defined in section 54 of the ACL. Travellers With Pets: Their is a Tick Infestation, and Its Only Going to Get Worse

This is an emergency alert for everyone travelling through the outback with their dogs. Ticks are everywhere, and your dog could be carrying the tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis! The NT government has announced that veterinarians across Australia have noticed more cases of dogs infected with this nasty disease – thousands in fact; meanwhile, WA reports seeing increased infections from them also. Tick-infested environments can be found in places like petrol stations, caravan parks, and when camping remotely. Be careful when you are in these places–you need to watch out for ticks! The tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis was particularly common in places like Katherine, on the outskirts of Darwin and around Kununurra in WA, stated Greg Mifsud, national wild dog management co-ordinator at the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions in Queensland. People need to make sure their dogs are protected against ticks. They should use both oral medication and an insecticide-impregnated collar. They should also check their animal often. Never take them to places where there is loose-leaf litter or areas that may have ticks. ACCC Issues Warning Over Deadly Heaters

Australia’s consumer watchdog has once again called for caravanners who may have a dangerous water heater in their leisure vehicle. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) encourages consumers to look for Suburban-branded dangerous dual fuel electric and gas heaters prior to embarking on post-COVID lockdown holidays. There is a concern that over half off these units can release deadly carbon monoxide odourless during the gas mode operation. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a terrifying and potentially deadly situation. It’s important to be aware of the signs so you can protect yourself from this hazard, as exposure may lead not only to severe chronic illness or injury but also death in some cases! This is quite alarming, as at present there are over 8300 people who have not been able to register their heating units in order for them be inspected free of charge. Myrtle Park Campgrounds, TAS Re-Open for Upcoming Holiday Season

The City of Launceston will reopen the ever-popular Myrtle Park camping site to the public on October 22nd, after a lengthy winter closure. The proposal to establish overnight camping costs at the site at $20 per night per site, up to a maximum of 10 persons, was unanimously approved at today’s ordinary meeting of councillors. This is the same price as it was last year, according to the recommendation. It is with great pleasure that Council has been able to restore access to the park in time for this summer’s school holidays, according to Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten. “Despite the fact that they will be on-site 24/7, the new operators are looking forwards to a busy summer season. Popular Rapid Bay Campground in S.A Remains Open Despite Complaints

Despite a letter from a neighbouring ratepayer who asked for the campground to be shut down, Rapid Bay Campground, in South Australia will remain open. A vote to keep the campground open and to sign a deal for a campsite manager to operate the land for the next two to three years was held in Yankalilla Council on Tuesday night. Cape Jervis Progress Association chairperson Lauren Barrington was inspired to start a petition after receiving many questions about the campsite’s future in May. Over time, it has received over 9,000 digital signatures. Even after replying to the ratepayers’ legal letter in May, Nigel Morris, Council chief executive hasn’t heard back from them. Mr Morris said that if it wasn’t a campground, the location would be just used for illegal camping. He said shutting the campground would cause more problems than it solves. A letter from a legal firm working for a Cygnet Place homeowner, requesting the campsite to be closed, was received by the council in May. Caravan Issues – Annoying & Continuous Defects Causing Problems for Van Owners

It is most disappointing to continually hear of the same type of Design and Quality problems still being detected by ‘Van Owners‘. Colin Delves Into the Issues It can only be hoped that the new requirements – as legislated in the Road Vehicle Standards Act – will help to prevent these defects from continuing… but as is now well-known, not all of these requirements will apply to all caravan manufacturers… especially the smaller manufacturers who are highly disproportionately represented in the number of problems reported. It seems incredible that all caravan manufacturers are not required to abide by the same stringent obligations, as mandated for motor vehicle manufacturers. More Community Events Being Cancelled for 2021

Covid 19 just keeps on rearing its head all around Australia, and in turn, cities and regions are having to cancel events, that bring in huge amounts of tourists and tourism spend. Multiple Events Being Cancelled The rising spread of the delta strain of Covid is once again causing states to restrict movement and force lockdowns around Australia. There are too many serious accidents – and frightening incidents – involving caravans attempting to over-take another vehicle on our roads. Car & Caravan over-taking another vehicle Safety is by far the most important consideration when towing a caravan. You must have sufficient power available to accelerate the car-caravan combination at a reasonable rate, and to maintain areasonable speed when climbing hills. It is vital that you are able to accelerate quickly to get out of trouble, and especially to avoid getting into trouble, for example when over-taking another vehicle. It is also vital that you are able to stop at a reasonable rate… safely, and in a straight line. With so many significant variables involved, it is not possible to provide a definitive procedure to determine the overall distance required for over-taking, for every tow-vehicle – caravan situation. More Rejection of Free Camps – The Saga Continues

Given the current situation with COVID-19, now has never been a better time to pack up your things and explore our big backyard that is Australia. Although now it feels as if low-cost or “free camping” may becoming a thing of the past, with more and more councils rejecting proposals put forth for free camping and low-cost campgrounds. Being forced to close up or shut down and no longer being available for use for those looking to stay away immersed in nature with an authentic brief camping experience or stopover. Many low-cost campgrounds around Australia face the same problem- not knowing what their future holds. Recently Albany, has been dismissed from a free campground proposal in the CBD. Camping Restrictions for the Easter Period

Easter is one of the busiest periods for camping and caravanning in Australia. This time last year, the whole country shut down all campgrounds and caravan parks. Chaos ensued as a lot of holiday makers preparing for the Easter break, had to cancel bookings and prepare to hunker down. Those who were already travelling on the road, where thrust into total confusion, as states shut borders and were found stranded. Covid-19, 12 Months On Things look a lot different 12 months on. Whilst all states have lifted camping restrictions, there are still some rules in place for the Easter period. Once of the more stricter states on Covid-19 restrictions is perhaps Queensland. The Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk announced easing restrictions to camping, which we covered in a previous post. All in all, it is looking like a normalish Easter break (touch wood) barring any catastrophic Covid outbreaks. However, be mindful of each state’s restrictions on camping. Queensland Eases Camping Restrictions in Time for Easter

Additional easing of COVID-19 restrictions is evidence that life and the economy are beginning to return to normal. Although the pandemic is not over, it’s possible to see minor signs of light at the end of the tunnel. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is beginning to relax some restrictions throughout Queensland. Although coronavirus is still present, it appears to be less prevalent than six months to a year ago. Some Queensland public hospitals remain on code yellow, and mobile coronavirus testing vans are still operating in Far North Queensland. These hospitals help to treat individuals in Indigenous communities, providing them with necessary medical care. On the other hand, in many parts of Queensland, restrictions are beginning to relax just in time for Easter weekend and school holidays — and residents couldn’t be happier about the situation. Easing From 12th March Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has relaxed COVID-19 restrictions beginning from the 12th March, increasing indoor gathering restrictions from 50 to 100 people. Grey Nomads On The Move

Mass Exodus from Southern States Contacts in New South Wales have advised FRC, that an unprecedented amount of Caravans and Motorhomes are heading north to Queensland. It is an effort to beat the midnight deadline on Wednesday when the borders will shut for all non-essential travel. Reports have shown that caravans and RVs at the usual overnight stops along the northern route have significantly increased. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is yet to outline what the stipulations are. The policy for Queensland’s interstate travellers attempting to cross its borders. As of Tuesday, the 24th of March, Tasmania have upgraded their policy with a Non-Essential travel ban. “If you don’t have a good reason to come into Tasmania, you will be asked to turn around”. South Australia and Western Australia have already closed their borders with a mandatory 14-day quarantined isolation period. The details for caravanners and RVers are yet to be released. Other states have not yet released exact details with respect to crossing of state borders. Enquiries with the respective tourism and government bodies have revealed that they are indicating the same policy that Tasmania is enforcing, will be adopted nationwide. Boats, trailers, and caravans could soon be effectively banned from being parked in Gold Coast streets. This is under a radical plan to free up more kerbside parking for cars. Broadbeach councillor Paul Taylor, who moved the motion in Council said the issue was “becoming a joke”. “We need those spaces … the kerbside is not a storage place.” The council has received a flood of complaints from neighbours with claims the unpowered vehicles are basically being “stored” free of charge on public roads. The council has now launched an investigation. Gold Coast City Council has now launched an investigation into how it deals with boats, trailers and caravans. Also could limit how long they can be parked in suburban areas to just one hour. That would bring them in line with vehicles longer than 7.5 metres. Buses and trucks for example, which can’t be parked for more than an hour. “As far as I’m concerned, if you’ve got a boat, trailer or caravan – you either store it at home or in a storage shed … or leave the boat in the water,” Cr Taylor told 9News.
