Mercedes-Benz Unveil their Kombi Campervan

Just recently, Mercedes-Benz has launched their modern version of the iconic ‘surfer-traveler-preferred’ Kombi Camper by Volkswagen.  Joshua Dowling takes a closer look at the upmarket camper.

Having been converted from just as simple delivery van, the German Luxury-Car maker presents its very own “Marco Polo”, a family seven-seater van which can become a “two storey” cozy camping vehicle.

It features a pop-up roof that serves the purpose of the top bunk. Imagine waking up each morning to the first rays of light with its screened window, perfect protection from mosquitoes and other insects. Once the seats below are folded, it also becomes a double-bed providing a comfortable trip.

“Marco Polo”, the only factory-built camper van of its type will be on sale in Australia next year. The price will start from $69,990, almost half the price compared to other locally-converted camper vehicles.

According to Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesman, David McCarthy, “Kombi-style camper vans were hugely popular in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s, but we believe this type of vehicle is going to make a comeback. — As cheap motels in quiet country towns have closed over the years, there is more demand from travelers who are bringing their own accommodation with them, either with caravans or campers.”

The Mercedes-Benz Company says the campaign is aimed at “grey nomads and young families”.

Mercedes “Marco Polo” also has a great performance as it can tow in a 2.5-tonne trailer, mod-cons extend to a rear view camera, and built-in touch screen navigation.
