Birdsville’s busiest week each year is the first one of September when The Birdsville Races take place, and when visitors from all parts of Australia and the world come to attend the spectacular horse races from August 31st to September 2nd.
What has first started as an event for hack and stock horses with a few local spectators in 1882, has now became carnival of 13-race program and boasts prize money of $200,000.
Crowds of around 7000 visitors each year enjoy two days of quality racing in the heart of Australia’s outback and three great nights of live entertainment. This year enjoy class horse racing and amazing entertainment including the RFDS Fun Run, RFDS Cocktail Party, Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe, Equine Fun Day (Thursday), Fashions on the Field, a variety of food vendors, and much more.
The Birdsville Caravan Park is available during race week and information on availability can be found at www.birdsvillecaravanpark.com. Free campsites are available on the banks of the Diamantina River. Portable toilets are provided at selected locations by the Diamantina Shire Council.
