Just out of Burnie TAS is a FREE CAMP at Cooee Point. Right on the waters edge, it is the site of the old town abattoir.
If you are there at the right time of year, you may even get to see the penguins feeding at night. Burnie’s forward thinking council has provided this spot for Fully Self Contained Vehicles. A permit is obtained from the Visitors Centre, and allows you to stay for 5 nights. The Info Centre is also home to the Makers Workshop which showcases Burnie’s history, makers, innovators and artist, allow a few hours just for this. Bernie and the surrounding areas have plenty to see and do, including the Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens just out of town, and Penguin Viewing Platforms.
It sure is a free caravan park stopover but the nearby asbestos building was badly burnt and is a danger to any person within parking range because of the deteriorating asbestos . Is free worth the cost of being a victim of an asbestos disease.
