Limits Imposed to Discourage Alcohol Hoarding
First, the Australian Government shuts the pubs and clubs to inhibit the spread of the Coronavirus, Covid-19. This move has now moved people into purchasing large quantities of take-away alcohol. Hot on the heels of the limits imposed on grocery items, as well as toilet paper, the states have now included the purchase of alcohol with limits.
As of Tuesday 31st March, temporary restrictions were introduced. Major Australian alcohol retailers have applied moderate restrictions on each person. They have also accompanied these announcements with an assurance that supplies are not drying up. The below limits are now in effect:
In NSW, Vic, ACT, Qld, NT, SA, and Tas, there are per person, per transaction limits on six categories. Customers able to buy from up to two different categories at a time:
- 12 bottles of wine
- two casks of wine (up to ten litres)
- two bottles of spirits (up to two litres)
- two cases of beer
- two cases of pre-mixed spirits/RTDs
- two cases of cider
These limitations apply to both in-store and online presence. The Major companies enforcing the limits are the Woolworths Groups of BWS and Dan Murphys. Included are Coles Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, and Aldi.
In WA, the purchase limits are stricter to adhere to state regulations. The customers are able to buy a maximum of two from the following categories; 11.25 litres of beer, cider, or pre-mixed spirits; 2.25 litres of wine; one litre of spirits; and one litre of fortified wine.
