Camping Mats Review

Good News!  The Camping Mats are back.

Believe me, since we hit the road some time ago now, we have had our fair share of wet weather and it is inevitable that when out camping or caravanning there will be times where your site will become water logged.  And if not water logged, sand, gravel and dirt always seems to find its way into the tent, caravan or motorhome.

Camping Mats

But, there is a solution!  Last year we were told about a great product to solve the problem.  Camping Mats.   It turns out, these drainage cells originally designed for landscaping make ideal camping mats.  You can use them individually, or clip them together to cover your entire area.  They raise things up just high enough to allow water to flow through and leave you with a firm dry surface.

The mat in boggy puddle

When we originally got them, we used them alongside our old rubber mat for a few weeks to compare the difference.  The old mat was OK, but unfortunately it didn’t stop us getting our feet wet and stepping in puddles when it rained.

The real advantage of the mats is that they are 3cm or 30mm thick, which is enough to raise you out of most water logged situations.

Each Mat is 3 cm thick

Camping Mats in Action

The mats can be used in many places around campsites.  Individually they make for great door mats or shower pads, and they are brilliant for sites with lots of sand.  They can be clipped together to make a solid platform, that would work well under awnings to keep belongings such as Eskys, chairs or belongings raised off the ground.   You can also clip them together length ways and use as pathways to prevent traipsing mud and dirt all over the van or camp site.

Specs

The Mats are made in Australia from 100% Recycled, high strength polypropylene.  Each panel is 50cm x 50cm x 3cm and weighs about 600 grams.  They come in a pack of 4 (2.4 kg) and are easy to clip together and pull apart.  They have a compressive strength of 100 t/m2, and are unaffected by mould, algae and resistant to oil and many other chemicals.

Specs

There are four interlocking tabs on the side of each panel which allows them to clip together in a variety of formations.   This means you can use them individually, or interlock them together on a flat plane or at right angles.

Warranty

Although designed primarily for sub structure applications, and not intended for continual use in direct sunlight, the mats come with a 12 month warranty against faults, provided they are not directly driven on without first filling each cell with required substrates.

What we think of them

We have been using the mats for over a year now, and quite often in wet weather.  At first they took a bit of getting used to as they were higher than our original mat.  We found they were best suited to grassy areas, and whilst they still worked well on gravel, could be a little slippery depending on the situation.  We would not recommend using them on concrete however as they were too slippery.

Best surfaces for mats

They were ideal for the outdoor shower, as the kids could stand on them and not get their feet all muddy, and it stopped a slush puddle from constant use.  They were also great at the front door.  They were also useful in the dry weather as being stiff you could wipe your feet on them and remove any dirt which would just fall through the holes.  Admittedly they are bigger to store than our previous mat, and not being flexible meant we have to find a new place to store them.  But, they can stand on end, be slid under seats, or placed in the car for easy access.

We loved them so much, we had to buy another set. Great quality, light and effortless to use, makes the camping area so much bigger and more practical. Just a heads up, buy the two sets. You will not only save on shipping but you will be ready for any situation.

Everybody NEEDS these.. don’t leave home without them.

  3. Mikehyde50hotmail.com

These mats are brilliant. Used them in two places. I lined bottom of my external forward lockers with them. I easily cut them to fit exactly, width and length -so I now will never get anything wet or soggy when the very heavy rain occasionally gets in. They are also very light thus not adding much to my drawbar tow ball weight.
Secondly, they are used underfoot under the awning . With this record breaking rain we have had, water has been freely flowing through under our van and awning shelter space. The 3 cm is perfect lift to get the entry area high and dry and minimise water, muck, etc coming into the van.
They are durable, easy to use and great value!

What can I say, these mats are amazing. We already had 4 packs, but have since purchased another 6. They are great for us as we do a lot of stays on farms where we spend months at a time & there is no grass, just dirt. And when it rains, we don’t get mud, dirt or water in the van, unlike the old rubber mats that would sink down into the water. We wanted a large area to cover outside the van as this is why we have so many If we are in a better ground covered area, we just use whatever we need., maybe 2 or 4.
They are easy to click together and we have a nice even surface to walk on.
So, if you are contemplating whether to purchase these, stop!! You won’t regret it!!!

Quick note about outdoor/camping mats. It has been several years since this occurred, however I have not heard or seen any mention of this use for these mats.

Parked up, waiting for the Grand Prix to clear, so we could leave the camp site. Hearing the revving, quick look, yep he is in trouble. First, when parking on sand, make sure exit is possible. A Ford Trader type motorhome, spinning the back wheels, burying them. Non english understanding was another barrier.

He was turning the front wheels, trying to bulldoze his way out. Secondly a major fire had gone through and burnt all the clumps of surface grass. Add to that a frantic wife, watching the other travellers looking at them as they drove away. Got the long shovel out, tried to explain to him what needed to be done.

Wife rushed around picking sticks slightly thicker than match sticks and threw them under the wheels. So eventually after a lot of bulldozing, he let me show him, dug the sand away in front of the wheels, turned front wheels to less. Got him to walk the path needed. Then got the camping mats out, to lay down in front of his wheels. About now I think he was ready to lock themselves inside and call for help.

Desperation won over, carefully creeping up onto the mats, replacing the ones behind to in front, in no time they were on firm ground. He was most definite, he was buying some of those mats. Maybe not a rely only on these situation, but handy if needed.

Thy are great – I bought 3 sets, Ditto the earlier remarks about fitting them together.
One thing to watch is don’t walk on the edges in bare feet – they are 3cm high and sharpish.
    Either:
A bevelled edging needs to be designed – for each pack of 4 “mats”, 8 would be needed.
Cut a matting, or lay something to go along the exposed edges
    Wear footwear!

  7. Gary Roberts

I haven’t used them yet, but as others say, the edges are quite sharp. I’ll be taking a sander to them I think. I think the postage is a little excessive as well.

    • Free Range Camping

Hi Gary, Thanks for the feedback. We are trying to get the postage down, however the courier companies work on the bulk size. All the best. FRC

  8. Lisa

Good versatile mats. The only downside is the edges of the mat are quite sharp!

  9. Peter Holmes

These work very well, as I can drive my gopher on them and recharge the batteries, and drive off easily.

  10. Jessica

So happy I found these, bought hard plastic ones many years ago and they have served me well and after recommending them to a family member I searched high and low and finally stumbled across these one. Not only are they higher, they seem a lot more durable and have made the perfect gift (recipient is extremely impressed!) Better than the foam ones they had.

  11. Mal & Chris

The single best Accessories we have purchased recently! Exceeded our expectations on our recent 2 month, 12500km trip! Easy to carry, versatile and effective.! Every camper and caravannef should have them! 11/10 !

  12. Howard Jack

Great for keeping up out of the wet. I bought a pack of 3. My only negative is that the edges are a bit harsh on bare feet especially old ones I don’t know about younger ones as mine are well past that point. I put a mat strip over the edge as a sole mate 🙂 . If you only ever put 4 together I guess you could chamfer the outer edges so they have a slope on them rather than use a mat.
Or maybe the makers could design a plastic or rubber wedge that would lock in to the edge to make it less painful..

  13. Vicki

    Hi.
I purchased the mats to use them as our shower floor while camping. My husband was very sceptical about these mats, as he thinks I can’t buy GREAT camping items of the internet.. well, did I prove him wrong. He/we love them. They will be the FIRST things we pack.
    Thank you so very much.

  14. Brent

These camping mats stop you getting a soggy floor, are relatively easy to put together and lightweight for travel.

We have 16 of them which gives about 4 sq/metres. 8 under the Joocla shower/toilet tent and 8 for under sitting area and in front of camp kitchen sink.

    5 stars

  15. Gail Newton

I am so happy with these mats, I have only used them 4 together under the step of our caravan. At first I found it hard to click them together but a couple of practices and now it’s easy. They stop so much dirt, grass, sand etc coming into the van. It says not to use on concrete but we have, we just popped some non slip mat under the corners and that seemed to work fine. And yes as Rhonda quoted above very tender on bare feet so suggested shoes be worn. Thanks for these mats they are just perfect for us.

  16. Rhonda Cranney

Fantastic for keeping feet out of the damp and wet. A little tender on soft feet so some type of covering might be needed for some.

  17. Marg

Happy , we purchased multiple sets .. ideal for our 6 week recent Central Australian Trip in the van . Was certainly a few laughs as we tried to interlock mats into perfect square the first few times. Perhaps a coloured corner or dot on matching areas would make fitting easier. Great product .

  18. Dean stapleton

One word: Versatile. My wife loves them.

  19. Rosanne Smith

These are used under a Coleman tent and are just perfect – protects the grass underneath from dying as well as lift the tent off the ground – couldn’t be happier
