Welcome to Free Range Camping e-news

Christmas & New Year have been and gone and we are fast approaching Easter.  No matter what style of camping you love, it’s another great time to get out and about and experience more of our great country.

This month we look at a few options when it comes to travelling around the country, including House/Farm sitting with your own RV, or helping out with projects like BlazeAid, where they provide you with your site and meals.

We have an update from our two Old chooks Ray & Di and how they have found the 'Big Lap' so far.  Our town review is of Stanley in Tasmania, and we check out a great new Aussie product, tracTAG which will help you find any lost property while you are out and about.  We also give you the chance to find one of six lost puppies and claim some great rewards.

FRC Updates

Following all the feedback from everyone using the FRC Web site and directory, we are currently updating the site with a whole new fresh look that will better reflect what we are trying to achieve at Free Range Camping.  It is still a work in progress and we are striving to improve all the time, so your patience and feedback whilst we are doing this is most appreciated.

Our aim is to make Free Range Camping a valuable tool for all campers and travellers around Australia.  At the same time, we love supporting as many small communities, farmers and volunteer organisations, local businesses or any new and innovative Aussie camping products as we can.

We are still only a small team and could always do with your input, so if you know of any great towns, locations, campsites, business, individuals, or great products that could do with our support, please write in and let us know.

Also, please feel free to send in any of your stories or photos that you think may inspire or help other travellers so we can share them on the site.

Drop us a line [email protected]

Stanley, TAS

Tucked away in the north western corner of Tasmania is the gorgeous little town of Stanley.  A real treasure on the Apple Isle, especially with the stunning 140m high Nut as a back drop to the town.

Having been there ourselves in the past, and with our ambassadors Ray & Di recently staying there for a week, we have prepared a short review on this amazing little town with so much to offer.

Find out what to see and were to camp by reading our full review via the link below.

Travellers Wanted

You may have heard of BlazeAid before, but did you know that ‘Greynomads’ and travellers are a major part of their workforce.   Every year, many volunteers pack the caravan or motorhome and head off on their trips.  Some like Brian Carr dedicating 8 months a year to Blazeaid projects as a co-coordinator.  Others make it part of their journey around Australia and tell of how the experience often changes their lives, whilst they in turn enhance the lives of others in the process.

BlazeAid are currently looking for volunteers with their own caravans or motorhomes to assist with their current projects in WA, SA & VIC, with QLD coming up later in the year.  So if you are on a trip around Australia, or just looking for a different Caravanning experience, jump on their web site to find out more about Blaze Aid.  How it all started, and the latest updates on where you can volunteer.

For everything you can't afford to lose

As campers and travellers we often take our most precious belongings with us.  Cameras, Phones, and Pets.   All things we cannot afford to lose, but often do as we are always on the move!  We know, as we have lost some of them ourselves in the past.  This is why we were so impressed with tracTAG.

A simple easy to use labeling system developed locally on the Sunshine Coast by Maree who lost her precious camera whilst travelling.

To find out more about this great tagging system and how to get them, click on the link below.

Find us and claim your Rewards

This Easter, FRC has joined with tracTAG & Kui Parks for a bit of fun.

We have organized for 6 of these gorgeous blue heeler pups to be lost in 6 Kui caravan parks right around Australia.  One in each state.  All you have to do is find them to claim your rewards.

Each puppy is tagged with a tracTAG medallion.  Once you find them in a Kui Park, you just need to scan the medallion with your phone, or enter its details on the tracTAG web site.

Think you are too old to do the Big Lap? - Think Again

9 Months ago our Free Range Camping ambassadors ‘Ray n Di' hit the road in their brand new Avida Motorhome.  Fresh with FRC decals and flat towing their Terios they have now made it most of the way round.  They have travelled anticlockwise from Queensland to Tasmania, and are now on their way back home.  They have experienced many trials and tribulations along the way, and are still talking to each other.

Ray at the ripe 'young' age of 82 is an inspiration and has even undergone surgery along the way showing that health is no barrier to travelling, Di is just as inspirational with an amazingly positive attitude embracing each new adventure along the way.

If anyone is seriously pondering whether they should do the big lap or not, we urge you to read this article written by Di and find out about life on the road, from the perspective of “Two Old Chooks.”

A great way to save while travelling

rays-house-sitting

Are you looking for ways to save money while travelling?  House or Farm Sitting could be a great alternative for you, especially if travelling in a Caravan or Motorhome, and wanting to stay somewhere for longer periods.   A few years ago we found ourselves in several situations where we were unable to find suitable and affordable accommodation.   Wanting to stay in several places for longer and with prices at some establishment’s way over the top, we needed alternatives and soon discovered House Sitting.

With many property owners looking to have their premises and pets looked after while they are away, getting a House Sitter in is a great alternative.  Even better, one that comes with their own caravan or motorhome.  For the home owner it offers security with less intrusion, and you don’t need much room.  Just somewhere for a caravan or motorhome to park, and perhaps provide some power and water.  For the traveller it not only offers a cost free alternative, but also provides them the opportunity to enjoy being back in a home environment for a short time or catch up on some gardening.

We were able to save hundreds of dollars at several locations.  You can find out more about our first few house sitting experiences here.

You can also register your home or property for free on the Free Range Camping Directory and find an ideal house sitter to look after your property while you are away.
