If you are interested in Australia’s history and pre-history, you’ll no doubt, sooner or later, find yourself in that fascinating area of Central Western Queensland roughly bounded by Longreach, Winton, Muttaburra and Barcaldine. Aramac lies about halfway between the latter two. While you may not encounter anything quite as big as the world famous Muttaburrasaurus these days, you may find the statue of the Big White Bull that lends its name to this welcoming stopover.
The Roadhouse was recently taken over by local couple Luke & Tahnee Woods and they have big plans for the near future. While it is currently a popular truck-stop, diner and petrol station, renovations underway will result in a comfortable and modern caravan park and camp site for vans and rigs of all sizes.
The choice of whether to dine-in or takeaway at the White Bull will be easier to make than the choice of meal, as their menu includes all the family favourites. In typical country style, the generous portions and hearty hospitality will find you planning to stop in on your return journey as well, or dropping in if you are ever in the area again.
Luke & Tahnee will let you know when their caravan park will open, which will make this a perfect spot to base yourself to explore the myriad interesting places in the area – Longreach, with its Stockman’s Hall of Fame and QANTAS Museum – Barcaldine with its place in Australia’s political history and the heritage listed Tree of Knowledge – Winton with a wealth of dinosaur fossils and tracks – the list of places of interest in the area is almost endless.
So when you do get out to visit this fascinating part of Australia, remember to stop in at Aramac and say g’day to Luke and Tahnee to refuel both yourself and the rig before you head off to the next destination.
