Great overnight spot off the Old Bruce Highway.
Calliope River Picnic and camping area is a spacious free camping ground beside the Calliope River. This site is provided by Gladstone Regional Council offering 48-hour unpowered site camping. The pet-friendly campground is accessible to motorhomes, caravans, camper trailers, and big rigs with areas suitable for tents.
HOW TO GET THERE
The main camping area is on the North side of the Calliope River just over the Bruce highway bridge when travelling North and is 8km north of the Gladstone-Calliope road. The Southside entry (via Old Bruce Highway is 4.7km from the Gladston-Calliope junction.
SITE ACCESS
Access to the site is by turning into the signed entrance for the Calliope Historical Village onto what was the old Bruce Highway. Continue past the museum to the campground on the right just before the road descends to the old bridge (now closed). The area on the South bank has new toilets and officially open again for camping from 2016.
FEES & BOOKINGS
As this is a free camp no fees or booking requirements apply, however, there is a lot of space but it can be very busy in peak season. Please help to keep the site clean and tidy and support the local community.
FACILITIES
The toilet facilities are regularly maintained by Gladstone Regional Council but if it is busy may run out of supplies.
THINGS TO DO
The Historical Museum is next door and the river is a known fishing spot, it is possible to launch a small boat from the southern bank
RULES – There is a 48 hour limit here.
Whilst this area is technically a Rest Area, the Gladstone Regional Council has permitted the use of this particular Rest Area for camping. Time limits do apply of 48 hours at this location, but there should also be signs available on site to indicate this.
Please note: Rest areas are not designed to be camping grounds or caravan parks. Using rest areas for multiple overnight stays as part of a planned itinerary is not in keeping with their intended purpose unless clearly indicated. Those needing facilities for an extended stay are encouraged to look for camping areas or caravan parks in towns along the way.
